[en] The benzylation of 6-deoxy-1,2-o-isopropylidene-3-o-mesyl-β-L-idofuranose resulted not only the expected 5-o-benzyl derivative, but the 5-o-benzyl-3-o-[(2-phenethyl)-sulfonyl] derivative as well. The structure of the latter was demonstrated by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, using the corresponding 3,5-di-o-benzyl and the 5-o-methyl-3-o-ethylsulfonyl derivative as model substances. These substances were obtained from 6-deoxy-1,2-o-isopropylidene-β-L-idofuranose by methylation. (author)
