AbstractAbstract
[en] The positive muon has been implanted as a proton substitute in a spherical sample of pure (5N) Pd. By means of a stroboscopic μSR technique the μ+ Knight shift has been measured as a function of temperature, covering the region between 20 K an 880 K. The experiment aimed to probe the local electronic structure of a proton- like impurity in Pd, to compare the μ+ and the proton NMR Knight shift (isotope effects) and to look for further experimental evidence for the local PdH bonding level or band well below (about 5.5 eV) the Fermi surface. Such a low lying bonding state independent of the hydrogen concentration was predicted by all theoretical calculations devoted so far to stochiometric as well as non-stochiometric or dilute PdH. The only experimental evidence so far comes from a photoemission experiment. (orig.)
