[en] A general idea is proposed according to which the gauge symmetries of grand unified models can restrict the Yukawa couplings in such a way as to make arg det M/sub Q/ naturally small (where M/sub Q/ is the quark mass matrix). A specific example model based on SU(6) is discussed in detail. It has q< or approx. =10-9, is economical of fields, and involves no discrete symmetries or new horizontal gauge symmetries.
