AbstractAbstract
[en] The NRC has required PSE and G to demonstrate that Salem Unit 2 has the capability to remove the core decay heat by natural circulation as a direct consequence of the TMI-2 event. Several tests which were delayed were performed at the beginning of September so that the full power operating license would be granted. After a reactor shutdown, the core power drops to about 3% of the full power level due to delayed neutron emission and the resulting decay heat; thus, natural circulation cooling capability of the normal coolant must be proven. The set of tests chosen are characteristic of the failures, whether actual, possible or contrived, associated with TMI - 2 experience
