AbstractAbstract
[en] Ten SO galaxies with very faint discs but normal (bright) central regions were selected from deep IIIaJ plates taken for the ESO/SRC Southern Sky Survey. Radio 21-cm line observations showed that two of these have large amounts of H I gas, with Msub(H)/Lsub(B) approximately > 0.5 solar units. The most hydrogen-rich galaxy in the sample, UKS 0016-579, has Msub(H)/Lsub(B) = 2.7 solar mass/solar luminosity. Combined with the results from other surveys of catalogued SO galaxies, these observations indicate that excess H I occurs preferentially in lenticulars with relatively faint discs. These H I-rich systems form a distinct morphological group. (author)
