[en] The use of a quadrupole ion trap to catch ions in flight and to trap them was investigated. The numerical results obtained indicate that in the Penning mode, in which the trapping forces are produced by d.c. electric and magnetic fields, the storage times are short. This mode is not suitable for trapping externally produced ions without an additional decelerating field gradient. (orig.)
