AbstractAbstract
[en] Neutral hydrogen has been detected in absorption in the radio galaxy 3C 293 at 21 cm wavelength. A central absorption feature lie at a velocity of 13,500 km s-1, which agrees with the optical emission-line redshift for the galaxy of 13,491 km s-1. An additional feature may be seen at 13,382 km s-1 with an optical depth of 0.030 as compared with an optical depth of 0.085 for the central feature. A possible feature may exist as a shallow trough redward of the central feature with an average optical depth of 0.05. The total velocity width at the base of the line, including the possible shallow feature, is 480 km s-1. The total column density for the whole feature is N/sub H/ = 1.8 x 1019 T /sub s/H I atoms cm-2. The velocity structure of the observed feature resembles that of the lines in Cen A, NGC 253, and NGC 4945
