AbstractAbstract
[en] Irradiation of the population due to the running of nuclear power stations represents less than 1% of the natural radioactivity today, and should amount to 3% at most by the year 2 000. The main effects of ionizing radiations are reviewed and their undetectability below 100 rems is underlined. Thus the evaluation of low-dose risks can only be speculative and the cautions hypothesis adopted is that of a linear relationship between dose and effect, together with the absence of threshold. According to calculations the worker, supposedly exposed to 500 mrem a year between ages 18 and 65, would run a 22.2% instead of the normal 22% risk of dying of cancer. As for the population, the risk would increase by only 1 per 10 000 in the year 2 000. This means that no other mutagenic and carcinogenic agent is as well regulated as radioactive pollution and efforts directed at a better control of harmful chemicals, for instance, are only taking an example from the ruling on radioprotection

L'irradiation de la population provoquee par le fonctionnement des centrales nucleaires ne represente actuellement que moins de 1% de la radioactivite naturelle, et en l'an 2 000, elle serait de 3% au maximum. Les principaux effets des rayonnements ionisants sont rappeles, et l'absence de leur mise en evidence en dessous de 100 rems est soulignee.
