[en] Among information management systems we include general purpose systems, such as text editors and data editors (forms management systems), as well as special purpose systems such as mail systems and computer based calendars. Based on a method for formal specification of some aspects of IMS, namely the structure of the data base, the update operations, and the user dialogue, the paper shows how reasonable procedures for executing IMS operations can be written in the notation of a first-order theory, in such a way that the procedure is a logical consequence of the specification.
