AbstractAbstract
[en] Processing of transuranic (TRU) wastes from US defense research and weapons production with surface dose rates < 2 mSv/hr (200 mR/hr) is being considered by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as a means of improving radionuclide retention in transportation and waste disposal. This project was funded by DOE at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory to develop preconceptual package designs for transportation of processed TRU waste products. Four design concepts were developed. The Type A package is designed for direct filling of processed TRU waste. This package could be shipped under the low-level solids rules in proposed revisions to transportation regulations or in a reusable Type B overpack. Two alternative reusable Type B overpack designs were developed for the Type A package. The fourth concept is a disposable Type B package for direct filling by processed TRU wastes
