AbstractAbstract
[en] The formation of the Nuclear Industry Radioactive Waste Executive (NIREX) is discussed together with the nuclear industry's concern to maintain the highest standards in the management of its wastes, the nature of these wastes and current disposal practices. These include the shallow land disposal facility at Drigg in Cumbria, and deep sea disposal, both of which are for wastes with a low level of radioactivity. The disposal facilities required for intermediate-level wastes, the need for which has been stressed by the Government and the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee, and NIREX plans for setting up these facilities are discussed. The quantities of waste involved and their packaging and transport from the sites of origin to the disposal sites are described. Priority given by NIREX to informing people of its policy and plans, and to promoting a wider appreciation of the nuclear industry's commitment to safe and economic waste management practices is emphasised.
