AbstractAbstract
[en] The application of the existing Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) neutral beam injectors for the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) is studied. It is determined that with the practical considerations of beam aperturing, ATF vacuum vessel complexity, and realistic beam modeling, the power absorbed by the plasma will be approximately 57% of the extracted neutral beam power, which corresponds to an injected power of about 1.5 MW. By reducing the beam divergence to a 10 Gaussian distribution, the absorbed power could be increased to 93%. The power delivered to the plasma is found to be a strong function of the beam divergence but only a weak function of the beam focal length. Shinethrough can be a serious problem if very low density startups are necessary. Preliminary calculations indicate that there will be no excessive fast-ion losses. 12 refs., 17 figs., 1 tab
