[en] In case of known tumorous disease proof or exclusion of metastases, possibly still asymptomatic, is an integral part of the tumour staging as well as the follow up program. In a minority of patients the first indication of a tumorous disease with skeletal affection is given by symptoms as pain, neurological deficit or pathological fractures. The aims of an effective search for the primary tumour site is on the one hand to find out the cases which, based on histology and tumour stage, can be treated successfully, on the other hand to improve quality of life and to prevent serious complications in case of extensive metastatic spread. In any case non-tumorous diseases with skeletal affection simulating a neoplasm by symptoms or appearance must be excluded. (orig.)

Bei bekannter Tumorerkrankung bilden Nachweis bzw. Ausschluss einer eventuell noch asymptomatischen Metastasierung einen festen Bestandteil des Tumorstaging wie auch des Nachsorgeprogramms. Bei einer Minderheit von Patienten allerdings gibt erst die Symptomatik mit Schmerzen, neurologischen Ausfaellen oder pathologischen Frakturen Hinweise auf ein Tumorgeschehen mit ossaerer Beteiligung. Ziel einer effektiven Tumorsuche ist es, einerseits diejenigen Erkrankungsfaelle herauszufinden, die aufgrund von Histologie und Tumorstadium therapeutisch erfolgreich angehbar sind, andererseits auch bei ausgedehnter Metastasierung schwerwiegenden Komplikationen zu begegnen und die Lebensqualitaet zu verbessern. Immer aber muessen nichttumoroese Erkrankungen mit ossaerer Beteiligung ausgeschlossen werden, die aufgrund von Symptomatik und Erscheinungsbild ein Neoplasma vortaeuschen koennen. (orig.)Journal
