AbstractAbstract
[en] A high resolution fast neutron time-of-flight spectrometer has been designed and constructed with its associated control units and electronics for the purpose of measuring 14 MeV differential elastic and inelastic cross sections with good accuracy, in order to provide a test of nuclear models currently used to describe these phenomena. The experimental facility provides the capability of measuring scattering from 20 to 160 degrees. Source neutrons are provided by the 3H(d,n)24He reaction. Scattered neutrons are detected in a massively shielded NE224 liquid scintillator detector located 12-13 meters from the scattering sample. A very large volume (approx. 8 litres) neutron detector has been designed and developed to achieve high energy resolution (300 KeV) and high detection efficiency. The elastic and inelastic cross sections of neutrons to ten excited states of up to 7.9 MeV excitation energy of 209Bi have been measured. Absolute cross sections are obtained by normalising to n-C scattering. Monte Carlo Simulation has been used to correct for finite source and sample effects. Spherical and deformed optical model calculations have been used to interpret the elastic and inelastic scattering data. These calculations are in good agreement with the data
