[en] The design basis of a nuclear power plant includes analyses of the response of the plant (or its various systems) to abnormal events that in likelihood and consequences, cover a wide spectrum. This paper discusses these events for Light Water Reactors (LWRs) and includes the extension of the traditional design basis to cover the operator and the expanded role in coping with more serious events, including multifailure considerations involving both the operator and plant equipment/systems
