AbstractAbstract
[en] The results of an experimental study of the effects of various parameters on laser surface modification are discussed. Using 310 stainless steel powder on a type 310 substrate, seven parameters in three general categories were studies: Laser Parameters: Power Density, Scan Speed, Optics, Shielding Gas; Material Parameters: Powder Size, Slurry Binder; and Alloy Modification: Boron Addition. Within the experimental ranges studied, the powder size, slurry binder strength, and shielding gas showed little effect on the overall melting efficiency and characteristics, while the laser delivery optics and their design showed a profound effect. Modification of the Type 310 SS by the addition of 1.5 weight percent of boron greatly enhanced the melting efficiency and fluidity of the alloy, and reduced the effect of the optic systems. It also resulted in smoother coatings, with less heat effect on the substrate
