[en] Radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerators have become a standard link between ion sources and linear ion accelerators replacing 'old' dc pre-accelerators. This new technique is described. At GSI Darmstadt, two different types, for light ions and for very heavy ions, have demonstrated their capabilities. Because of the simplicity and reliability of these machines applications to ion implantation techniques should be considered. (author)
