[en] The displacements resulting from excavation of a drift in layered tuffs at Rainier Mesa, Nevada, have been analyzed. Also, a series of two-dimensional finite-element analyses of the excavation sequence using linear elastic and nonlinear compliant joint material models has been made. Measured displacements were on the order of millimeters and show vertical and horizontal closure. Calculated displacements are also on the order of millimeters; vertical and horizontal closure is predicted in some of the analyses performed. 5 refs., 3 figs., 3 tabs
