AbstractAbstract
[en] AES and SIMS studies have been carried out on chemical reactions induced by 0.5-4 keV D2+, N2+, CO+, and CO2+ ion beams on an Al surface. D2+ impact on Al foils in an ultrahigh vacuum or in a D2 atmosphere produces secondary ions, AlD+, AlD2+ and Al2D+, in addition to Al+ and Al2+. These ions are also produced by Ar+ impact on Al foils in a D2 atmosphere. Results obtained on their yields suggest that these D-atom containing secondary ions are produced from aluminium deuterides formed by successive chemical reactions induced by D2+. The Al surface bombarded with N2+ was covered with AlN completely or partially, depending on the impact energy of N2+. The Al surface partially covered with AlN was found to undergo rapid, complete oxidation when exposed to O2 gas. The results obtained for CO+ and CO2+ impact showed that CO+ impact produces Al4C3 selectively, while CO2+ impact produces both Al4C3 and aluminium oxide. (orig.)
