AbstractAbstract
[en] This review briefly summarizes the papers presented at the final Research Co-ordination Meeting on insect disinfestation of food and agricultural products by irradiation. The conclusions of the Co-ordinated Research Programme were that: (1) In practical application, radiation dosages must be derived after considering many factors, including, principally, the cost and whether lethal or sterilizing dosages are required. (2) Where packages are used, they can be designed to resist post-radiation infestation. (3) Packages and packaging materials can lend themselves to post-irradiation treatments such as controlled temperature and fumigation. (4) Where feasible, mild heating can be used in conjunction with irradiation to increase the effectiveness while decreasing the radiation dosages. 12 refs
