AbstractAbstract
[en] Since the Department of Radiation Oncology at Westmead Hospital opened in January 1980, all stage T1 and T2 cancers of the larynx have been treated with radical radiotherapy. Selected T3 and T4 tumours have also been irradiated as an alternative to total laryngectomy. This paper presents an analysis of the outcome of treatment for the 141 patients treated in the first 9 years. An unpublished preliminary analysis in 1985 suggested a relatively high local failure rate for T2 cancers of the vocal cord. Subsequent to that time all patients with vocal cord cancers have been treated with one centimetre of tissue-equivalent bolus applied to the skin overlying the larynx until a dose of 50Gy is reached. In addition, 11 patients with T2 vocal cord cancers received concurrent chemotherapy using 5-Fluorouracil and Mitomycin C. The observed results of these measures are reported. 48 refs., 2 tabs., 8 figs
