[en] Chernobyl highlighted deficiencies in the Soviet regulatory system, but fortunately, the new spirit of perestroika has made it easier to implement the necessary improvements. Soviet delegates at a recent IAEA conference described what is being done. The Soviet State Committee on the Supervision of Nuclear Power Safety (Gosatomenergonadzor) is responsible for the organisation of safety work carried out at nuclear plants, and is also responsible for the control of safety research programmes being developed.
