[en] Chiral charge in (3+1)-dimensional finite temperature QED does not relax to zero, even though it can fluctuate at high temperature. There is a conserved, gauge invariant chiral charge in QED which is related to ltinking number. We discuss the connection with some recent arguments relating the relaxation rate to the fluctuation rate for baryon number in the standard model. (orig.)
