AbstractAbstract
[en] Simulators play a major role in the training of the engineering staff who operate Scottish Nuclear's power stations. The company has been involved in the construction and use of training simulators since the late 1970s when the first simulator, for the Hunterston 'B' Reactor Shutdown Sequence Equipment, was put in service. Full-scope replica control room simulators have subsequently been installed, on site, at Hunterston 'B' (1984) and Torness (1987). The depth of the modelling employed in these two simulators and the realism with which they mimic their reference plants place them among the best in the world. The high fidelity simulation has allowed a wide range of training programmes to be devised, up to and including their use for the staging of the annual Emergency Exercise demonstration required by the United Kingdom Regulatory Authority. The simulators have also proved invaluable in assessing plant modifications and changes to operating procedures. Public relations activities have benefitted from demonstration to interested parties on the characteristics of the Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor design. (author)
