AbstractAbstract
[en] In June of 1991 a collaborative investigation to determine the arsenic content of hair and nail remains of former president Zachary Taylor was established between the Analytical Chemistry Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Two samples of both hair and nail were irradiated and analyzed in the Neutron Activation Analysis Laboratory at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. The results of these analyses were key in disproving a theory that the former president had been poisoned by the ingestion of arsenic. In this presentation the analysis procedure is described, results presented, and the series of events that led up to this investigation taking place at ORNL is explained from a historical perspective
