AbstractAbstract
[en] Development of new reactor concepts throughout the world is divergent. One approach is to develop small and medium capacity reactors incorporating passive and inherent safety features. Another approach, favoured by Framatome in France and Siemens in Germany, is to develop reactors based on the existing 1300 to 1500 MW high water reactors which have proved successful in the past. These have a proven design, years of operating experience and the cost-effectiveness of the larger plants, in their favour. New developments with the aim of improving safety concentrate on core melt accident and design basis accident prevention. The objectives are listed. The intention is to produce a design which could be licensed in France and Germany. The development programme is outlined. (UK)
