AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors discuss several novel developments in the theory of dissipative and collisionless electron drift wave turbulence. Their emphasis is on spectral transfer mechanisms, nonlocal interactions, and the structure of fluctuation spectra. In the case of the dissipative trapped electron regime, a density equation with two quadratic nonlinearities is derived. The two nonlinearities, ExB0 and polarization, transfer spectral energy in opposite directions. In particular, the ExB0 nonlinearity acts to cut-off the well-known inverse cascade to large scales, and establishes a direct cascade range for kθ ρ < k0 ρ = √ var-epsilon Cs/LTe vee. As a result, the spectral shape is different for kθρ gt-or-lt k0ρ. Also, the long wavelength dynamics are noted to be similar to that of trapped ion modes, thus smoothly joining shorter wavelength drift wave turbulence to them. Ion Compton scattering is shown to be irrelevant for toroidal modes, due to the flute-like nature of their structure. Spectra, fluctuation levels and transport coefficients are calculated. In the collisionless regime, trapped electron mode coupling has been established to be an important effect, and more robust than trapped electron Compton scattering, which is highly sensitive to resonance conditions. An electron mode coupling equation has been derived. An assessment of the competition between electron and ion nonlinear processes is underway and is discussed. Finally, the authors investigate nonlocal interaction processes in drift wave turbulence. In particular, modulational interactions and parametric subharmonic instabilities are addressed. Some speculations on the relation between long wavelength drift wave turbulence and nonlocal transport processes are discussed in light of the modulational interaction
