AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors present first results of full 3-D calculations of ideal MHD growth rates with finite compressibility for stellarator plasmas. In previous studies, the incompressibility condition was assumed so that only stability index could be calculated. They have now incorporated the full compressional terms into the 3-D linear ideal MHD code TERPSICHORE. The inclusion of this term has the advantage of being able to calculate the physical growth rate. The new code has been benchmarked against known stability results of 2-D axisymmetric Solov'ev equilibrium. They have also applied the code to truly 3-D stellarator equilibria and obtained physical growth rates. Preliminary results indicate it is essential to decouple sound waves from shear Alfven waves in order to obtain accurate results. As a consequence, the number of Fourier modes needed to insure convergence is substantially broadened. Various numerical aspects of the new code are discussed. Also a tunable integration finite element method which has been implemented in the code is discussed. This method has been shown to suppress numerically destabilized continuum modes near resonance surfaces induced by the hybrid finite element method. Detailed results are shown. Finally, applications to the proposed LHD device are presented. 2 refs
