AbstractAbstract
[en] A highly model-independent and simple description of the process γγ→ππ near the threshold is proposed in the framework of the S-matrix approach in order to obtain the pion polarizabilities from experimental data. A combined analysis of data on the processes γγ→π+π- (MARK-II) and γγ→π0π0 (Crystal Ball) leads to the values (α-β)c = (6.0 ± 1.2) x 10-42 cm3 and (α-β)N = (-1.4± 2.1) x 10-42 cm3 for α00μ = 0.24 and α20μ = -0.04. The data indicate independently a rather small value of the π+ polarizability, which is consistent with predictions of current algebra and inconsistent with the experimental value from the process πZ→πγZ. 21 refs., 4 figs
