AbstractAbstract
[en] The intention of the recent conference on nuclear power plant safety standards was to promote the harmonization of international standards for the safety of nuclear power plants. Points raised included the need for national individual responsibilities within an international framework and the need for increased safety through containment and plant design. The merits of different reactor types were discussed. The use of probabilistic and deterministic safety criteria was advocated. The economic benefits of greater uniformity in safety standards were mentioned, but this was also important to improve public relations. Through the work of WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) and INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operations), safety standards within those operations in the groups had improved and savings made.
