AbstractAbstract
[en] From the data of promulgation of the first Atomic Power Program in 1956 up to, and including, 1994 the German Federal Government spent approx. DM 29 billion on the promotion of nuclear power, mainly for participation in experimental facilities and demonstration plants and for research and development projects. Most of those plants were commissioned between 1960 and 1980. They comprise prototype and demonstration plants, research and experimental reactors, and other, smaller installations in national research centers, and a research mine. All of the plants are located on the territory of the old German federal states. Some of the plants are no longer in operation, have been dismantled in part, or are to be demolished. A factor of major importance in the continued use of nuclear power in Germany is the practical demonstration of environmentally compatible, low-cost decommissioning and demolition procedures. The report presents a survey of the current status of decommissioning, demolition, and financing of old nuclear installations under the responsibility of the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Technology.
