[en] In order to control the possible consequences on the environment of the aforesaid activities, the Radioprotection Unit of JRC Ispra has been carrying out the measurements necessary to guarantee constantly the physical surveillance of the workers and of the environment. These are still the main duties of the service, though research activities, support to European Commission and external contracts are important as well. Moreover, the Radioprotection Unit plays a fundamental role in the Italian network for the control of the environmental radioactivity, and during the following weeks after the Chernobyl accident it was a point of reference for the Italian authorities. The Unit has very well equipped laboratories of radiochemistry, radiometry, dosimetry, whole body counter and instruments calibration. A meteorological service is also in operation. (authors)
