AbstractAbstract
[en] Decree No. 184/1997 (Art. 12 Para 1 and Art. 34 Para 10) requires that the exposure of persons living together with outpatients should not exceed 5 mSv/year (1 mSv/year for persons under 18). Monitoring of the radiation burden of persons living together with outpatients to whom 131I had been applied showed that the average effective dose from external irradiation of a family member is about 5 mSv (both adults and children), the effective dose from internal contamination is at the level of 0.1 and 0.8 mSv for an adult and a child, respectively (the values relate to 1 GBq of 131I in the patient's body when dismissed from the hospital). Thus, the patient could be dismissed with 500-600 MBq radioiodine in his or her body if no children live in the household. Effective dose estimate for family members living with patients having 186Re-HEDP or 153Sm-EDTMP in their bodies shows that no limitations are necessary in the application of the radiopharmaceuticals. Written guidelines for the patients, requiring that their intimate contact with the family members be limited to the lowest extent possible, are necessary in all cases
