AbstractAbstract
[en] In mid-September in 1999, science officers of the diplomatic missions in Germany as well as representatives of the publishing house Dr. H. Boettiger Verlag GmbH have come together at the science center in Bonn for a lecture and discussion meeting devoted to a very topical subject: ''Nuclear transmutation - the era of nuclear power just begins''. The emerging transmutation technology aims at converting unstable isotopes (of nuclear wastes) into nuclear substances with shorter and therefore more acceptable half-lives. According to the scientific experiments carried out at the Cern Institute in Geneva, the transmutation process offers solutions for a serious problem accompanying nuclear power generation, as it reduces the radiological hazardousness of nuclear wastes. The Cern scientists say that via nuclear transmutation it will be possible to reduce ten thousandfold the radioactive radiation released from nuclear wastes after a decay time of ten years, as compared to the radioactivity of a commercial pressurized water reactor. (orig./CB)Original Title
