AbstractAbstract
[en] Various practices, events and uses of radiation sources have resulted in releases of radioactive materials to the environment. These form a large legacy of radioactive residues that must be evaluated and managed in some way. Summaries of evaluations prepared by UNSCEAR are presented in this paper, including releases from atmospheric nuclear testing, production of weapons material, nuclear power production and the consequences of various accidents. The natural radiation background and the use of fuels and minerals containing natural radionuclides must also be recognized as important contributors to the radiation exposure of all people. (author)
