AbstractAbstract
[en] Large amounts of radioactive waste from the power generating and military industries have accumulated in Russia, and storage capacities for spent fuel are running out, especially for RBMK nuclear power plants. The bulk of the accumulated radioactive waste is from reprocessing facilities. Two serious radiation accidents, the first at the ''Mayak'' complex in 1957 and the second at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1986, have led to radioactive contamination of large tracts of land. However, examples of environmental pollution from peaceful nuclear explosions are very rare, and peaceful explosions can have practical outcomes. Data from peaceful nuclear explosions, for example, can play a unique role in predicting the behaviour of radionuclides, their leaching and transport by groundwater. (author)
