AbstractAbstract
[en] Instrumentation activities of the IAEA Laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria, are described. Instrument design for radiation monitoring in nuclear facilities has been done by the laboratories, and portable systems to monitor radioactivity in gaseous effluents are described. Instruments for environmental monitoring using activation analysis and automated readout systems are described and their uses are discussed. Materials analysis is another challenge for instrumentation. X-ray fluorescence analysis systems have become a focus for the Instrumentation Unit which has developed systems with sample changers which hold up to twelve samples for sequential analysis. Insect control using the sterile male technique requires rapid sorting of insect pupae, and the Instrumentation Unit has provided such rapid sorting machines to sense color differences in the pupae and to do mechanical separation. The Instrumentation Unit of the Seibersdorf Laboratory has provided the Dosimetry Unit with high-dose gamma dosimetry capability and the calibration facility for the instruments. Further activities of the Instrumentation Unit include the support systems to ensure reliable power conditioning, training in the uses of instrumentation, and development of complete workstations for repair and maintenance of the instruments
