AbstractAbstract
[en] The Queensland Government is committed to developing gas and electricity markets to deliver lower energy prices and greater choice to consumers. The key features of the 'Cleaner Energy Policy are: 1. facilitate the development of a base-load gas-fired power station in the Townsville region; 2. work with the developers of the PNG gas pipeline to advance the construction of the Townsville to Gladstone section of the pipeline; 3. require energy retailers in Queensland to source 13 percent of their electricity from gas-fired generation as from 1 January 2005. Also, a number of new initiatives have been taken to help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30 million tonnes over ten years. Considering that in the future will be a world of price penalties for greenhouse gas emissions, this new energy policy could save the State economy around $80 million per year by 2008, totalling $320 million by the end of the first assessment period in 2012
