AbstractAbstract
[en] The reduction of atmospheric mercury emissions from coal-fired boilers was discussed with particular focus on the technical issues facing utilities and their attempts to manage mercury emissions. There are several uncertainties about the variability of coal mercury content, the chemical form of the emitted mercury (speciation), the atmospheric transformation and fate of emitted mercury. The effectiveness and cost of mercury control technologies under commercial application to new and existing coal-fired units is also uncertain. This paper also presented some linkages between different national and bi-national regulatory initiatives with emphasis on the state of stack measurement methodologies. The efforts by the Canadian utilities to develop a Canada-side standard for mercury emissions from electric power generation were also described
