AbstractAbstract
[en] The nuclear industry in the UK has generated waste for over 50 years. Early waste management involved the storage of raw waste in facilities with no plans for future treatment and disposal. n the early 1980's BNFL developed a strategy which has led to a significant advancement in nuclear waste management. This has involved the treatment of newly generated waste to allow storage and eventual disposal. A number of plants have been constructed and are in operation. The retrieval and treatment of wastes produced in the past is a major challenge BNFL is meeting with the construction and operation of several new plant. The waste management activities in BNFL have been supported by major research and technology programmes. There are some challenges yet to be resolved and BNFL is currently addressing these. When BNFL is successful it will help to support the future nuclear programme in the UK. (author)
