AbstractAbstract
[en] Full text: Detection of low boron concentrations either in cell cultures or tumor tissue is a very interesting subject in the present development of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). This therapy requires selective absorption of no-toxic boron compounds in tumor tissue. PIGE (Particle Induced Gamma ray Emission) allows isotopic identification and is a very sensitive technique for light elements. The applicability of the reaction 10B(p,p'γ)10B* using 7.2 MeV protons for the detection of 10B in biological samples has been studied. The cross section of this reaction presents a resonance at 7.2 MeV. The proton beam was produced by the 20 MV Tandem accelerator TANDAR at CNEA. The effect of the organic bulk in boron detection has been studied by adding known concentrations of boron (in form of boric acid) in biological samples. Moreover, calibration curves have been obtained. The organic mass was reduced by digestion with nitric acid. About boron detection in cell cultures no interference reactions have been observed. Finally, this technique provides enough sensitivity to detect the boron concentrations required for tumor irradiation with neutrons
