AbstractAbstract
[en] The main purpose of this work is the analysis of the scaling characteristics of Vrancea intermediate depth earthquakes, using broadband recordings. A set of 25 earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.1 and 7.4, recorded since 1976, is considered. We selected 12 representative broadband stations with a good azimuthal coverage for Vrancea earthquakes and situated inside the continental plates. The corresponding epicentral distance ranges from 0.4 to 90 degrees. To characterize the spectral shape, the ω-γ spectral model of Brune and Hanks was applied for all usable P- and S-wave records, corrected for attenuation, to determine the low frequency spectral level, corner frequency and high frequency spectral decay. The corner frequency and spectral slope were estimated, at each station, as averages of all reliable values for different components and phases (P, pP, sP, S and sS). Our results show a clear deviation from the trend expected for shallow earthquakes: for a given magnitude, the subcrustal source is characterized by a higher corner frequency (smaller rupture area) as compared with a shallow source. This implies a significantly increased stress drop at intermediate depth domain and is strongly outlined for larger events (Mw > 6). The corner frequency values deduced from S waves are generally smaller than those obtained from P waves and the scattering is less pronounced. The spectral slope values as a function of magnitude are grouped around γ 2, with a slight tendency of increasing with increasing earthquake size. (authors)
