AbstractAbstract
[en] Surface active thoria powders were obtained by two different techniques viz., calcination of deagglomerated thorium oxalate and combustion synthesis. Small cylindrical crucibles were made from these powders by cold compaction followed by sintering at temperatures ranging from 1443 to 1873 K. The compaction behaviour of these powders and the density of the crucibles obtained from them are compared. Enhancement of sinterability due to the addition of a sintering aid (Nb2O5) to the powders synthesised by the combustion method is demonstrated. It is also shown that the powders produced in the oxalate route yield compacts which are less prone for defects and could be sintered up to a density of 9.3 g/cc. (author)
