AbstractAbstract
[en] The RERTR program started in 1978 and had its last annual international meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil in October 1998. The target of this program is to eliminate the risk of proliferation and misuse of the HEU by converting research reactors from using HEU to LEU. 36 research reactors are in the process of conversion (8) or fully converted (28) on the basis oft the existing U3Si2 (4.8 gU/cc) fuel. Higher density fuels up to 8-9 gU/cc on a U-Mo basis are being developed to also achieve the conversion of high performance research reactors. The U.S. spent nuclear fuel return program is under good progress. Efforts are being made to establish similar RERTR and spent fuel return programs in Russia. Concerns about missing global or regional back-end solutions mainly for countries without a nuclear program were raised. (author)
