[en] Contrary to what was formerly experienced in the case of loess sediment, the luminescence dating of a coversand deposit at Ossendrecht (the south-western Netherlands) revealed two specific problems in the determination of the annual radiation dose: 1) the low concentration of U, Th and K present in the sample, and 2) sample inhomogeneity. In addition to NaI(Tl) gamma-ray field measurements, the first problem was tackled by measuring a large volume of sample (1.5 kg sample mass) in Marinelli geometry with a low-background extended energy range HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer in the laboratory. The sample inhomogeneity effect was eliminated by crushing (via ball-milling down to < 50 μm particle size) and homogenising about 200 g sample, from which then gram-size aliquots were taken for NAA, ZnS alpha counting and GM beta counting. Comparison of the finally obtained results turned out to be satisfactory. (author)
