AbstractAbstract
[en] The Development Centre of Nuclear Technology (Centro de Desenvolvimento da Tecnologia Nuclear - CDTN) is one of the research institutes belonging to National Commission of Nuclear Energy - CNEN, which is responsible for the management of the radioactive waste generated in Brazil. CDTN has been receiving radioactive waste since 1988, one year after the radiological accident in Goiania city. After the accident, CNEN intensified efforts to collect all disused sources from the radioactive facilities in order to minimise the possibility of accidents. As a result of these efforts, a large number of sources are stored at the CNEN institutes. This paper presents some steps of the management of disused sources, coming from nuclear gauges, received as radioactive waste at CDTN. The goal of the strategy that has been implemented, is to decrease the volume of this radioactive waste, through the reutilization of part of the sources and efficient conditioning of the not reusable ones. The sources of nuclear gauges will be taken-out of the original shielding in a shielded cell, where the reusable ones will be wipe tested. If they do not present leakage the sources will be available to radioisotope users. The not reusable sources will be conditioned into a special packaging placed under the shielded cell, awaiting further transport and storage. (author)
