AbstractAbstract
[en] The study of naturally occurring and artificial radionuclide concentrations are useful to determine their distribution in the marine environment, and to gain an understanding of the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes which control their behavior in the sea. Furthermore, baseline radioactive studies in marine sediments are of fundamental importance for any country, like Mexico, that initiates a nuclear energy program, and that borders with a highly industrialized nuclear nation. Until very recently there was a total lack of radioactivity baseline information for the Southern Gulf of Mexico. This paper summarizers the results of a research project initiated in 1993 to remedy this situation, and reports on the first ever natural (k40, BI214 and Pb210) and artificial (Cs137) radionuclide concentrations in marine sediments of this very important body of water
