AbstractAbstract
[en] The nuclear energy programme based on accelerator-driven system, in first principles, helps eliminate whatever reservations some people may have against its universal acceptance. The public perceptions of the so-called and over publicized shortcomings of nuclear energy applications like disposal of nuclear waste, deterministic safety against reactivity excursions etc. find technological solutions with ADS. This would result in acceptance of nuclear energy as not only just inevitable, but also a viable means of energy for the mankind. The tough developmental demands for feasible ADS also seem to be achievable judging from the present rate of technological advancements. In the Indian context, the country stands to gain in a much bigger way through quicker utilization of fuel reserves of thorium which are nearly inexhaustible. The earlier the implementation of this fuel cycle as may be possible through ADS, the less will be the accumulated long-lived nuclear waste to eliminate
