AbstractAbstract
[en] Purna river basin, mainly located in Akola and Amaravati district of Maharashtra in central India, is an inland basin. About 40% of the total area (7500 km2) of the basin is underlain by saline and brackish groundwater. The electrical conductivity of the groundwaters of the area varies from 400 to over 30,000 μS/cm. Some of the earlier studies in the area regarding the origin of salinity suggested intrusion of ancient seawater through Son-Narmada lineament, irrigation practices causing accretion and subsequent dissolution of salts in the soil horizons as well as dissolution of salts through the rock matrix. This paper deals with some studies with δ34S of aqueous sulphate to understand origin of salinity in the groundwaters
