[en] The author reviews the passive residual heat removal systems of several advanced nuclear energy systems including CANDU9, PIUS and AP600, estimates their advantages and disadvantages and presents a concept design of a residual heat removal system with passive moderator for the thorium-based advanced nuclear energy system (TANES), TANES being developed by Tsinghua University and ACEL. The performances and the key problems of this design are analyzed in detail
